Upon launch of the Arkship toward Andromeda, all personnel on board will cease to be members of their respective governmental or military organizations and become part of the Milky Way Alliance Forces. Starfleet members will, at least theoretically, cease to be members of Starfleet and Citizens of the United Federation of Planets, and become members of the MWAF and citizens of the Milky Way Alliance. Although each sentient race or political organization has their own civilian government in their own habitation holodeck, to cut down on the chance of civil war between rival races with rival militaries, all military personnel are, for legal purposes, assumed to be citizens of the MWA as a whole, rather than their previous nationalities. As such, they will have a unified rank structure, replacing their former Starfleet, Klingon, Romulan, Dominion, or whatever ranks. This image shows the ranks, and their rough equivalents in early 21st-century United States Army and Navy rank structures, late 24th-century United Federation of Planets Starfleet rank structures, and a short description of the practical usage of these ranks on the Arkship itself. I'm not gonna even try to put this into table format with UBB code. Just click on the d**n image to enlarge it.

Hey, I like this... as Martin's character has pointed out in the storyline, too many militaries use the term "commander" for WAY too many things. So once the Minshara gets underway, getting some handle on who ranks who is a great idea. I especially like the use of "colonel" to get around that pesky "commander" rank being below a captain, or "captain" being below a major.
Speaking of ranks, call me shallow, but I also love the rank pips that have showed up on my postings. Good job, MB!

Heh, glad you like them I couldn't do the ranks with half pips because of the way the pips are coded, but I'm glad someone enjoys them I might change the ranks to match the list here. Also good idea working it into the story... didn't think of that ... it'd be a fun subplot

Speaking of half-pips, Mlle, if I remember correctly, in ST:TNG, when a person got their flag (meaning "reached admiral"), to distinguish between the various levels of admiral, they would wear two, three, four, or five pips in a golden rectangle. They also tended to wear two "pip boxes" on their "collar", because... hell, they were admirals, and wanted you to notice them!
So you could have the fleet commander, subcommander, and the captains have their pip boxes, the hoi palloi get their standard gold pips, and then give silver pips to the enlisted. That way you avoid the whole full pip/half pip mixture for Fed terms like "Lieutenant Junior Grade."
