{name:Nerek#|#picture:2}Once again, Nerek was eight years old, sitting in a class full of his peers. They were in the middle of a history lesson; they had been learning of the life of Surak and the historical climate in which his philosophies were born. They had been covering the topic for about two weeks now, and now were nearing the end of the unit.
"It is at this time the Separatist group who would become known as the Sundered made an assault on this very city, the result of which was the devastation of Shikahr and the death of Surak."
"I ask forgiveness Teacher," Nerek said in a small yet even voice, "But is it not true that the bombing of Shikahr was not caused by the Separatists, but the te-Vikram, opposed to Surak and the Separatists cause?
Nerek's teacher was slow to give the boy his attention, as if unused to being interrupted, "That is incorrect , Nerek. The te-Vikram were opposed to Surak and his philosophy of waging peace, the Separatists were also opposed to Surak's-"
"But is it not true that Surak began the Separatist Movement himself?" It had been bothering Nerek for some time now, he had been waiting and waiting for Teacher Sozin to mention this, but opportunities had come and gone, and now Nerek was all but sure he was not going to mention it, leaving Nerek confused.
Sozin stared at the boy in what would have been in a Romulan utter shock, but was merely a focused look of interest in the old Vulcan.
Nerek continued bravely, "When T'Kehr Karatek offered Surak guest-friendship, the political climate on Vulcan was such that neither believed we would live very many more generations, due to the poisoning of TRuhk by nuclear war. Surak believed that in order to preserve Vulcan, an expedition to find a new homeworld would have to be made. Surak, Karatek and others would form a group that would put this plan into action, turning a small fleet of war vessels, with the help of the science academy, to the goal of exploration and preservation of not only Vulcan, but also the kir'Shara."
Teacher Sozin seemed to size up Nerek and his challenge to established history, "Where have you gotten these... ideas, Nerek?"
"My father, Linguistics Fellow Ruanek of the Vulcan Science Academy," he didn't know why he added his father's title, as though it would lend credence to his words.
Sozin's face seemed to change, was that pity or perhaps condescension? " Ah, I see the flaw in your logic. Perhaps your father was telling you a story meant to entertain," he said this with an air of distaste, as though he disapproved of making up misleading stories about Surak designed to elevate the proto-Romulans.
Nerek also disapproved of what Sozin was implying, "My Father would not lie." Nerek could feel his face becoming hot. 'control', Nerek thought, 'logic is the cornerstone,'
"Perhaps he was mistaken." Sozin said with a finality that implied the conversation was over.
"But-" Nerek began, but Sozin cut him off with unseemly haste.
"If you would like to discuss this further, we can do so after class."
"Yes sir."
----------
Nerek quietly opened the door to his house, aiming to attract as little attention as possible.
"You're late," it was his father's voice, slightly muffled from looking down onto the PADD in his hand, "your mother and I were becoming concerned."
"I apologize, I stayed after school." a troubled expression crossed Nerek's young face, but he quickly mastered it, "I will prepare for the evening meal." before Ruanek could add anything more, Nerek went to make his preparations.
Not five minutes later, the comm beeped.
Ruanek answered the hail, and wasn't totally surprised to see Sozin, one of Nerek's teachers. "I have just had a very intriguing conversation with your son."
"Nerek did mention he stayed after school," Ruanek offered, "Has something occurred that I should know about?"
"I have just spent the last 1.3 hours attempting to correct Nerek of a very serious... misguidance in his worldview."
"Oh?"
"He seems to have taken to some very creative notions regarding the Time of the Sundering. Fellow Ruanek, I can understand the need to reconcile his mixed heritage, but perhaps in future, you should refrain from telling him outright falsehoods. It only serves to confuse him, and waste precious class time."
Ruanek knew which was more important to Sozin.
